Investing in Our Youth's Financial Future: Why Teaching Teens to Trade Matters

Investing in Our Youth's Financial Future: Why Teaching Teens to Trade Matters

Friday, December 20, 2024

Written By: Les Lasure VP of Finance

Each week when I sit with youth I am reminded of the importance of understanding finance, and the impact it has on creating well-rounded adults. One question consistently emerges: "Why should I care about the stock market now? I'm just a teenager." This question touches the heart of why our organization is passionate about teaching trading and investment principles to young people, particularly in our community.

Starting Early: More Than Just Making Money

When we teach teenagers about trading and investing, we're not just showing them how to buy and sell stocks – we're opening their eyes to how the global economy works. Think of it like learning a new language. Just as teenagers pick up languages faster than adults, they also grasp financial concepts more readily when exposed early. But there's something even more powerful at play here.

Understanding trading teaches our youth critical thinking skills that extend far beyond the financial markets. When a young person learns to analyze a company's performance, track market trends, and make informed decisions about investments, they're developing skills that will serve them in every aspect of their lives.

Building Future Leaders Through Financial Knowledge

In my years of mentoring, I've noticed a remarkable transformation in teens who embrace trading education. They begin to:

  1. Think Strategically: Trading requires planning, patience, and the ability to see the bigger picture – all essential leadership qualities.
  2. Develop Emotional Intelligence: Learning to handle the ups and downs of the market builds resilience and emotional control, crucial skills for future leaders.
  3. Understand Risk Management: Trading teaches young people how to assess risks and make calculated decisions, a skill that translates directly to business leadership.
  4. Build Global Awareness: Following markets naturally leads to following world events, creating more informed and globally minded leaders.

The Ripple Effect in Our Communities

When young people understand financial markets, they bring this knowledge back to their families and communities. I've witnessed teenagers teaching their parents about investment opportunities and helping younger siblings understand the value of long-term financial planning. This ripple effect creates a more financially literate community, breaking cycles of economic disadvantage.

Beyond Personal Gain: The Bigger Picture

The impact of early trading education extends far beyond individual success. Today's teens who understand markets become tomorrow's:

  • Business Owners who create jobs in their communities
  • Financial Advisors who guide others toward wealth building
  • Community Leaders who advocate for economic empowerment
  • Policy Makers who understand how financial decisions affect different communities

Starting the Journey

For teens reading this, remember: You don't need to be a math genius or come from a wealthy family to learn trading. Start small, stay curious, and take advantage of the many free resources available. Join investment clubs at school, participate in stock market simulators, and most importantly, seek out mentors who can guide you.

A Call to Action

To my fellow community leaders and educators: We must prioritize financial education, particularly trading and investment knowledge, in our youth programs. This isn't just about creating future traders – it's about empowering the next generation with the tools they need to become effective leaders and change-makers in their communities.

The earlier we can introduce these concepts, the better equipped our youth will be to navigate an increasingly complex financial world. More importantly, they'll be better positioned to lead their communities toward economic empowerment and sustainability.

Remember, every successful trader and business leader started somewhere. By teaching our teens to trade today, we're not just investing in their individual futures – we're investing in the future of our entire community.

Let's commit to making financial literacy, including trading education, a fundamental part of youth development. The leaders of tomorrow are in our classrooms today, and they deserve every tool we can give them to succee

The History Of 100 Black Men
How It All Began

The overall concept of “The 100” began in 1963 in New York City when a group of concerned African American men began to meet to explore ways of improving conditions in their community. These visionaries included businessmen and industry leaders such as David Dinkins, Robert Mangum, Dr. William Hayling, Nathaniel Goldston III, Livingston Wingate, Andrew Hatcher, and Jackie Robinson.

On October 2, 1986, representatives from 100 Black Men Chapters converged in Washington, DC, for a final meeting to establish a national organization. During previous meetings, they determined the structure, governance and model that would provide the most effective physical and financial resources to support the communities and Chapters. At the final gathering, the organization’s name – 100 Black Men of America, Inc. – was unveiled and attendees elected four accomplished, professional men from within their ranks to serve as its first and founding officers.

Each of the four were selected based on their demonstrated commitment to give back in a holistic way that addressed the educational, social, emotional, and cultural needs of youth in their own communities. They put their hands to the plow and did the hard work necessary to establish a foundation for a network of Chapters in their infancy, which today is an international nonprofit organization that positively impacts more than 125,000 youth across the United States and abroad. Throughout our history, the leadership of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. has been impeccable. The men chosen as national leaders all have contributed to the growth and strength of the organization. Their unique contributions have helped The 100 to become one of the premiere mentoring organizations anywhere. Consider the impact each leader has made. On May 27, 1987, in Atlanta, Georgia, this newly formed mentoring organization held its first national conference and introduced itself to the nation. Noted speakers included the late Alex P. Haley and the late Honorable Maynard H. Jackson.
